UFC 276 updates – Adesanya, Volkanovski, and Pereira, emerge victorious

UFC 276 updates

The International Fight Week climaxed with UFC 276 on Saturday, which saw some of the best performances in UFC’s history. Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena kept fans excited throughout the night, as the event featured two title fights and marquee players of the UFC circuit.

The main event featured Israel Adesanya defending his middleweight title against Jared Cannonier, while Alex Pereira displayed his brutal MMA skills to defeat Sean Strickland. The co-main event between Volkanovski and Holloway streamlined the featherweight contest.

In short, there’s a lot to tittle-tattle about the UFC 276 as it delivered some of the best matches of 2022.

Alex Pereira vs. Sean Strickland – Middleweight

Alex Pereira inched closer to a potential middleweight title fight with Israel Adesanya after he devastated Sean Strickland at UFC 276. The middleweight fight attracted a lot of cheers as it would produce the next title challenger for Israel Adesanya.

Strickland started strong against his opponent, putting Pereira on the back foot early. The American fighter used his jabs to good effect, troubling the Brazilian opponent in the early stages of the opening round.

Alex Pereira didn’t take long to mark his presence as he went after his opponent after the two-minute mark. The Brazilian fighter used his front kicks and elbows to good effect and forced Strickland to stick to a defensive approach.

Pereira’s orthodox stance helped him a lot, while his height advantage was clearly visible in the context. Strickland couldn’t capitalize on a few openings offered by his opponent after his initial start, as Pereira continued to dominate the fight.

It looked like a one-sided affair, and eventually, Pereira closed the fight with his signature left hook. The impact left Strickland on his knees, and he tried to find some cover. However, the Brazilian fighter followed with a straight right hand to close the fight in the first round.

The official mark confirmed the end at 2:36 of the first round. The win propels Pereira for a potential middleweight title shot against Israel Adesanya. The Brazilian fighter also improved his middleweight rankings, which drew praises from other MMA fighters.

Final Result: Alex Pereira defeated Sean Strickland via TKO in round one.

Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway – Co-main event (Featherweight)

UFC 276 featured a co-main event between two of the best featherweight fighters, Vokanovski and Holloway. Although Max Holloway put on a brilliant performance, the featherweight champion displayed his skills and produced a masterpiece to secure the match.

The five-round match had multiple exciting moments as both fighters tried to close the game with their skills. However, Volkanovski maintained his posture and secured a comfortable victory, winning the match by 50-45.

Both fighters were adamant about securing an early strike as they exchanged strikes in the opening round. However, none of them could produce a lethal blow that could decide an early winner.

The second round picked up pace as Volkanovski resorted to an aggressive stance, which allowed him to land a crucial blow on his opponent. The impact left a cut on Holloway’s left eye, spilling blood all over the octagon.

Volkanovski capitalized on this advantage and dominated the second and third rounds. Holloway faced difficulties with his opponent’s pace, and by the time he could change his tactics, Volkanovski was already ahead in the game.

The Hawaiian fighter needed a lethal blow to stop Volkanovski. While he did manage to land some strikes, they were not enough to turn the match in his favor.

On the other hand, Volkanovski continued his pressure on Holloway till the fifth round, which helped him to remain on the winning side on the judges’ scorecard.

Final result: Alexander Volkanovski defeated Max Holloway in UFC 276 co-main event.

Israel Adesanya vs. Jared Cannonier – UFC 276 main event

In a much-anticipated match between defending middleweight champion and contender Jared Cannonier, Adesanya won the match via unanimous decision.

Adesanya thrilled the entrance with a dramatic entry inspired by the legendary WWE superstar, The Undertaker. However, the excitement didn’t enter the octagon, as the defending champion chose to use a methodical way throughout the match.

Adesanya worked more on his jabs and kicks to secure points, which somehow annoyed the crowd. However, his effort paid with points and helped him to counter a powerhouse challenger.

Meanwhile, Cannonier tried everything to disrupt the defending champion’s rhythm and somewhat succeeded during mid-fight. However, Adesanya defused the attempt, as the challenger could only manage to land knees on his opponent.

In short, the game lacked thrilling exchanges, especially with Cannonier, who comes with a reputation of picking up opponents with ease. Instead, the game showcased the technical skills of the defending champion, as he used the octagon to good effect to stay out of Cannonier’s striking range.

The challenger tried everything, including takedown attempts and grappling techniques. However, Adesanya defused his challenger’s attempts, showcasing his newly evolved wrestling skills throughout the match.

With the official start to the fourth round, fans began to display their disappointment as both fighters failed to meet their expectations. It was rare to see that two of the best middleweight fighters failed to produce an exciting fight.

Many fans revolted by booing when both fighters didn’t engage, even when standing within striking range. The disappointment grew more as the match entered the fifth, as many fans left the stadium without waiting for the final result.

The remaining fans booed as officials announced Adesanya as the winner, which is very rare for a top-seed UFC encounter.

Final result: Israel Adesanya defeated Jared Cannonier (49-46/49-46/50-45) via unanimous decision.
