UFC 269: All You Need To Know!

UFC 269: Oliveira vs. Poirier

UFC 269 saw some of the most exciting fights of the year, with two belts placed on the line. Fans witnessed the first title defense of Charles Oliveira, who won the undisputed lightweight belt back in May against Michael Chandler in UFC 262. “The Lioness” Amanda Nunes also went up against Julianna Pena for her sixth bantamweight title defense. It’s safe to say that UFC 269 was not disappointing at all with intense fights and some really shocking wins.

The Main Event

The main event fight was an incredible matchup between Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier for the undisputed lightweight champion. This was one of the most awaited title fights of the year, and fans got what exactly they came for.

After two back-to-back wins against McGregor, Dustin Poirier was coming in as the number one lightweight contender. He was also the betting favorite to win against Charles Oliveira. With dominant performances in his last few fights, fans were quite excited to see how he would perform against the current champ.

The fight started off with some heavy punches landing from both the fighters. Oliveira was landing some brutal elbows and body shots. However, Dustin did not hold back either and displayed his clean striking as always. He was able to knock down Oliveira a few times during the first round. But despite the heavy punishment, Oliveira was able to survive round 1.

In the second round, Oliveira was able to make the adjustments and turned the fight around. After scoring a takedown, he stayed on top for the most part of the round and landed some heavy ground and pound. With this clear advantage, Oliveira put all his weight on Dustin to exhaust him and landed some brutal elbows. Two of the judges scored the second round 10-8 for Oliveira for his dominant performance.

By round 3, Dustin was clearly a little exhausted, and Oliveira continued his momentum. He quickly rushed Poirier against the cage. And from the clinch position, Oliveira was able to transition onto Dustin’s back. After applying some pressure from the back, Oliveira got a hold of Dustin’s neck and submitted Dustin with a standing rear-naked choke in just 1:02 of the third round.

With this win, Oliveira proved all his doubters wrong and extended his win streak to 10.

Co-Main Event

The co-main event of UFC 269 saw one of the biggest upsets in the history of UFC. The bout was set for a title fight in the women’s UFC Bantamweight division between Amanda Nunes and Julianna Penna.

Before the fight, Nunes was coming in as one of the most dominant fighters of all time against Pena, who was 11-4. With a 12-fight win streak and seven title defenses for Amanda Nunes, MMA fans were sure that this would be another easy win for her. To show just how dominant of a fighter she is, Amanda was an outrageous -1000 betting favorite.

When the fight started, Nunes was quick to display her dominance by taking the fight to the ground. Although she wasn’t able to land too many shots, her grappling level proved to be too good for Pena. Somehow, Pena was able to survive the first round.

In the second round, both fighters stood toe to toe and threw heavy jabs at each other. However, after Nunes missed two overhand rights, Pena was able to outstrike her and eventually hurt her with some amazing jabs. Nunes did everything she could but wasn’t able to land her punches as she was getting rocked by her opponents’ jabs.

Seeing that Nunes was hurt, Pena took her down and got on top of her back. She eventually grabbed hold of her neck and got a quick submission win over Amanda Nunes. Pena pulled off one of if not the biggest upset in UFC’s history. This was undoubtedly the most shocking UFC win in recent memory.

Main Card Fights

Besides the two amazing main and co-main fights, the rest of the main card fights were absolute fire as well. The main card of UFC 269 started off with a flyweight bout between Sean O’Malley and Raulian Paiva. O’Malley had an amazing run prior to the fight, but Pavia was expected to be his toughest competition yet. However, O’Malley did not disappoint and secured a quick first-round TKO.

The next fight was followed by another flyweight fight between Kai Kara-France and Cody Garbrandt. Garbrandt was fighting his first flyweight bout after moving down from Bantamweight. He was expected to win and was a betting favorite. However, Kai pulled off an upset by knocking out Garbrandt in the first round.

The third fight of the main card was between Geoff Neal and Santiago Ponzinibbio for a welterweight bout. It was a close striking battle between the two welterweights. However, after three rounds of fighting, the fight went to the judges’ decision, and Neal secured a split decision win over Santiago.
