UFC 267 Blachowicz Vs. Teixeira

UFC 267 turned out to be another blockbuster event! Fans and fighters gathered at the famous Yas Island in Abu Dhabi and witnessed some fantastic matches. The light heavyweight title was on the line, and this was the second title defense for the champ Jan Blachowicz. The main card also had some fantastic matchups, and like always, UFC didn’t disappoint! So here’s how it all went down in Abu Dhabi.

The main event

Lets’ start with the main event of the evening. Glover Teixeira is a legend in the UFC for many reasons. Spanning almost two decades in his MMA career, he is now the second oldest fighter with a title in the history of UFC. At 42 years old, he successfully defeated the light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz.

Teixeira got his first title shot in 2014 against the undefeated Jon Jones. Although he lost the fight, Teixeira made sure he did everything right to become the champion when he got his second shot.

Both fighters came in well prepared for the match. As expected, Teixeira made the most of his Jiu-jitsu background and went for the takedown in the first minute. But Blachowicz responded well and defended the takedown. The champ kept his hands busy with strikes, but Teixeira kept moving forward. It made Blachowicz uncomfortable in the first round. However, he successfully defended the takedown attempts and executed them well.

But it didn’t take long for the fight to finish. In the second round, Teixeira changed his game plan and moved to striking mode. A left hook rocked the champ, but Teixeira also ate some shots. The fight went to the ground as Teixeira finally executed a takedown, which poised him for submission. At 3:02 minutes in the second round, Blachowicz gave away his back, and Teixeira submitted him with a rear-naked choke. The win saw him make history in the UFC and his MMA record moved to 33-7. The light heavyweight division has a new champ now!

The co-main event

The co-main event was nothing less than spectacular for the fans. Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen went the full three rounds in the bantamweight division. As expected, both fighters went in fast with kicks and strikes. Sandhagen kept himself busy the first round landing his shots, but Jan also countered well. It took longer for Jan to settle in, but once he did, the fight got intense.

Although Sandhagen kept moving fast, Jan took a more cautious approach picking his moments. The significant strikes were more for him. That saw him land the most significant strike in the match: a spinning back fist and a left-hand strike that saw Sandhagen drop to the floor. Although he recovered soon, the match started to turn towards Jan’s favor.

Sandhagen is a tough fighter, and he proved it by continuously moving forward despite Jan’s strikes. But it was the precision strikes of Jan that saw him get the points. In the final round, Jan landed another big shot; a kick to the head. But again, Sandhagen stood up for it. As the final seconds of the last round drew closer, both fighters exchanged a flurry of shots. The fans started to roar in excitement as both fighters exchanged blows.

The fight went Jan’s way. The judges gave a unanimous decision.

The main card

Apart from the main event and co-main event, the main card also had three other fantastic matches. Islam Makhachev submitted Dan Hooker in the very first round and continued his winning streak. It’s now nine straight wins for the Russian.

Khamzat Chimaev also submitted his opponent Li Jingliang in the welterweight division. The first-round submission makes his UFC record 10-0 so far.

In the heavyweight division, Alexander Volkov took a unanimous decision to win over Marcin Tybura. He looked more composed with excellent footwork, making it difficult for Tybura to adjust to his game plan.

Magomed Ankalaev also continued his winning streak defeating Volkan Oezdemir via unanimous decision. He took a patient and calculated approach towards Volkan and landed clean shots that got him hurt. All three rounds went his way.
