NFL Draft, 2022 – Travon Walker gets First Pick

NFL Draft, 2022

NFL fans were in for a shock tonight as the Jacksonville Jaguars chose Travon Walker from Georgia in the first pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. The event took place in Las Vegas on Thursday at 8:00 PM ET.

Many did not expect this to happen as there was no hype surrounding Walker before the NFL Draft. Most people had expected Aidan Hutchinson from Michigan to be the first pick because he was making headlines as a finalist in the College Football Playoff. Instead, he was the second pick and was drafted by Detroit.

The other interesting thing that happened on Thursday night was that the first five selections included only defensive players. It was the first time since 2013 that this had happened.

Who is Travon Walker?

Not many people would have known Travon Walker before this year’s draft cycle. He was one of the few five stars that joined Georgia. He was an excellent inclusion to an already-strong defensive line-up.

The Bulldogs chose him as a defensive tackle, and it was no fluke. He was the number two defensive tackle in the United States. However, circumstances forced him to switch his position when the 2020 season started. Other players like Wyatt, Davis, and Carter cemented their place in Georgia’s defensive line-up.

With the inclusion of those players on the interior side, there was no option left but to move Walker to the outside. For Walker, this was not a problem. He could adapt to the new role quickly as he had played there during his schooling days.

He had to wait his turn to show his talent, as other players ahead of him on the team were four and five-star recruits. He had to be the starting edge rusher once these players got drafted by other teams. This was an excellent opportunity for him as the Bulldogs were going to the national championships.

The 2021 season took him to another level and molded him into an elite-level player. This made him one of the most sought-after rookie football players. He was also known for his adaptability in many positions.

All these experiences have accumulated and given the NFL this year’s number 1 pick.

NFL Draft – Some of the Best Picks

After the first five picks were all defensive players, the offensive players were the next to be picked. The teams were looking for players that could catch a ball in the initial 20 picks.

AJ Brown was traded off to Philly by the Titans, and Marquise Brown was acquired by Arizona from the Ravens. No quarterback was selected in the draft until pick number 20 when the Pittsburgh Steelers chose Kenny Pickett.

Pickett has a natural eye for leverage advantages and is an incredible thrower of the ball. He has a very well-balanced body – his upper and lower bodies complement one another perfectly!

He doesn’t take much time to understand the dynamics of the game. If he sees that a defender is getting dragged away by someone’s runs, he will attack that space left unguarded by the defender. It takes instinct as well as hard work to get to this level.

He has such ability that his long passes will always reach his receivers or reach the bucket.

Aidan Hutchinson was the number 2 pick of the draft. His consistency and perseverance managed to send the Wolverines to their maiden college playoff. After a breakout year, he finally got drafted by the Detroit Lions as a pro.

The Texans drafted cornerback Derek Stingley Junior, and he was more than excited to be part of the new Texan roster. He promised to work hard and be a good teammate to everyone.

Charles Cross went from Mississippi to the Seattle Seahawks as the number 9 pick. He is one of the best offensive tackles drafted by Seattle. After his draft, more receivers were picked by different teams.

Jameson Williams transferred from Alabama to Detroit that moved up in a trade with Minnesota, their division rivals. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson went from Ohio to the New York Jets, dubbed a significant win for Zach Wilson. The Jets also took Ahmad Gardner as the number 4 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
